2026 (2025) Projects on the Nasonville Valley Railroad
Expansion and Improvement Projects
- Clearing and Preparation:
- Removing select trees to open corridors for upcoming expansion projects, including space for a new lead from the mainline to the turntable. This adjustment is necessary as the existing lead will be removed when the Shirley Covered Bridge is raised. The cleared area will also accommodate a future expanded engine house.
- Genaro Trestle Improvements:
- Modifying and double-tracking the Genaro Trestle to improve traffic flow and operational capacity.
- Shirley Covered Bridge Elevation:
- Raising the bridge by 15 inches to reduce the current 3.2% grade to a more manageable 1% incline, enhancing safety and performance for heavier trains.
- Mainline Grade Reprofiling:
- Regrading the line from the crossing, around the back of the house, and to the front to achieve a consistent 2.5% grade (previously peaking at approximately 3.3%).
- Curve Optimization:
- Standardizing all curve radii to 31 feet, correcting one particularly tight section previously measured at only 21 feet.
- Bridge Replacement:
- Replacing the old culvert bridge with a new truss bridge, ensuring improved structural integrity and aesthetic harmony with the railroad’s heritage design.
This may seem ambitious, but much of the work is already underway. If the weather holds for a few more weeks, I should have significant progress made before winter, ensuring a strong start come spring.

WOW—WHERE IS THIS LOCATED? ARE VISITORS WELCOME? I COULD GET A RIDE DOWN FROM DOUGLAS, MA WHERE I LIVE. BEEN READING YOUR STUFF FOR YEARS!
