Raising the Covered Bridge: Mainline Grade Improvements Underway
A major improvement project is underway on the mainline section that runs alongside the turntable, through the Covered Bridge, and onward to the Genaro Trestle. This stretch holds special significance, as it was the first section of track my father and I laid back in September 2005, marking the true beginning of the Nasonville Valley Railroad.
It is remarkable that, after 20 years in the ground, only a handful of ties showed any rot—the vast majority still look almost brand new.
Smoothing Out the Mainline Grade
As it exists today, the mainline drops downhill beside the turntable toward the Covered Bridge, then immediately climbs a steep grade—nearly 4%—from the bridge up to the Genaro Trestle. This abrupt change in elevation has made this segment one of the most challenging parts of the railroad.
To correct this, the Covered Bridge will be raised approximately 15 inches, allowing the entire stretch—from the turntable area through the bridge and up to the trestle—to be reworked to a far more manageable 1.2% grade. This will significantly improve train handling and operational flow.
Relocating the Turntable Lead
Because the existing turntable lead cannot meet the new elevation profile, it will be moved to the opposite side of the turntable. This new alignment will tie smoothly into the regraded mainline.
Preparing Space for Expansion
To make room for the relocated lead and future development, four trees behind the turntable are being removed. This will create the necessary space for the new alignment as well as for a planned three- to four-stall engine house.
Looking Ahead
These improvements will provide a smoother grade, safer operations, and expanded facilities—another significant step forward in the ongoing development of the Nasonville Valley Railroad.
