What is a railroad without a station? A station is the heart of a railroad—the place where people gather, where passengers catch a ride, and where trains are watched, admired, and enjoyed. Especially on a Live Steam backyard railroad, a station adds something essential. It becomes a focal point that draws attention, excitement, and community.

I’ve wanted to build a station for the railroad for a long time. While working on the line this past fall, a spot between the turntable and the new trestle caught my eye. I could immediately see it in my mind: the building itself, a covered waiting area, and a natural place for people to pause and gather. It won’t be a large structure, but it will serve as a strong visual anchor for the railroad and a comfortable place to linger during meets. And, truth be told, it may even double as a small hermitage—a quiet place for prayer and recollection.

The design has been evolving for quite some time, but this week things finally moved from planning to action. After doing the final figuring, I picked up the first 2×4s at Lowe’s, and the project officially began. There have already been a few minor tweaks along the way, including a slight adjustment to the height so all four walls can be built inside my wood shop and then carried out and assembled on site. Even so, the finished station is clear in my mind, complete with a bench and a bit of subtle mood lighting.

The station area will also gain a second track, allowing trains to continue rolling smoothly through the area while people gather and enjoy the scene.

This is my current project until the Consolidation boiler returns. Then, I put old Pio back together.
